I am extremely pleased to write this editorial for the Inaugural Issue of One Health Bulletin. It is with great honor and enthusiasm that I begin my tenure as the Inaugural Editor-in-Chief of this new Journal.

The founding of One Health Bulletin is in line with the development trends of global health concept. In the 21st century, with the acceleration of global integration, increasing population mobility and rapid development of international trade, zoonotic diseases, food security, antibiotic resistance and environmental pollution have become major public health issues that seriously threaten human health. In particular, the outbreak of MERS, SARS and H7N9 in the past 20 years and current COVID-19 pandemic have further aggravated the complexity of health issues. Therefore, the One Health concept of “One Planet, One World, One Health” has attracted global attention and been put into practice in global the health governance.

China is implementing One Health concept with numerous practical measures. In 2017, General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed the Healthy China Strategy in 19th CPC National Congress report. In 2019, the Implementation and Assessment Plan of the Healthy China Action issued by the G O of the State Council proposed new concepts, ideas and requirements for reforming and developing medical and health services, and promoted Healthy China Building as a national strategy. Therefore, “Health” has become an important “keyword” in the discourse of China’s future development.

2020 marks the first year of setting up Hainan Free Trade Port. The Provincial Party Committee and Government innovated the public health governance system of Hainan Free Trade Port with the orientation of “One Health”. On March 14, 2020, Governor Shen Xiaoming, later became Secretary, put forward the following guiding opinions at the symposium on “One Health” in Hainan Province: comprehensively introducing the One Health concept, taking the government governance system and governance ability construction as the breakthrough point, establishing “One Health” system in terms of system reform and mechanism innovation, interdisciplinary joint research, talent cultivation and international cooperation. And promoting Healthy Hainan construction, ecological civilization construction, food safety and security guarantee as well as driving the development of agriculture, animal husbandry and other related industries.

Hainan Medical University has established the One Health Research Center in the practice of “One Health” in Hainan, which plays a crucial role in technical support innovation, international cooperation innovation and talent cultivation innovation. Under the care and promotion of provincial leaders, after a year of research, consultation and preparation, the One Health Research Center at Hainan Medical University was inaugurated in June 2021, and One Health Bulletin is officially launched as scheduled.

As the first “One Health” journal in China, One Health Bulletin has clearly positioned itself as an international journal serving the global community in advancing One Health. It makes full use of the unprecedentedly open policy of Hainan Fre Trade Port and invites the worldwide high-profile experts in this field to establish a highly internationalized editorial board as well as striving for high quality articles at home and abroad. Furthermore, it cooperates with international publishers, creates new pattern of dual circulation involving both domestic and foreign markets for the Journal, offers broader academic platform globally for domestic scholars. By all of the above actions, the Journal will surely promote the communication and integration of academic thoughts and theoretical research in the sphere of One Health at home and abroad and share China experience to constantly enhance the international awareness and influence.

Until now, the world is still facing the grave situation of COVID-19, so One Health Bulletin is launched at an opportune time and shoulders heavy responsibilities. We sincerely invite scholars and practitioners worldwide who are devoted to One Health to contribute to and support the development of this Journal. May we work together to promote human health undertakings.
