The current COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented catastrophe in human history over the past one hundred years, posing serious threats to human health and having long-term and incalculable impacts on global economy. In addition to infectious disease epidemics, humankind is facing other major public health challenges as well, including issues related to food safety, air pollution, ecological disasters caused by extreme weather, zoonosis, and antibiotic resistance. Tackling these challenges requires concerted global response. The One Health approach is the key to solving these problems by emphasizing interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, and cross-regional collaboration to achieve harmony for the health of humans, animals, and the environment.

In the past decades, China has made remarkable achievements in the prevention and control of schistosomiasis and malaria through concerted efforts. Since 2003, China has implemented joint prevention and control mechanisms in the prevention and control of SARS, H7N9, Dengue and COVID-19. The Initiative of Establishing the Community of Common Health for Mankind was proposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to encourage all countries in the world to jointly safeguard the lives of all human beings. The One Health approach emphasizes the integration of global public health governance, which is key to upholding the community with a shared future for mankind. Themed with “One Health and Human Health”, the 697th Xiangshan Scientific Conference has reached the Chinese consensus based on the concept of One Health, which is hailed as a One Health milestone event in China.

Public health security is of vital importance to the world. The One Health approach has become a global consensus to deal with major public health issues, with far-reaching implications for scientific questions, research targets, and research methods in human health. As the first One Health journal in China, the One Health Bulletin will focus on major global public health issues, being based in China but embracing the entire world, to closely follow and present global One Health research and practice activities with a broad perspective and propose feasible paths for global public health governance. As a comprehensive publication and academic exchange platform, the One Health Bulletin looks forward to all varying levels of participation from experts, scholars, and government officers of different disciplines around the world to make contributions to improving human health.
